Over the years, I have become EXTREMELY picky about what fibers I use in my art. I have found some truly amazing fibers out there and hope that my personal opinions help you in your tatting and fiber art endeavors.
One thread I have thoroughtly enjoyed tatting with is Finca perle cotton. These wonderful perle cottons come in sizes 8, 12, & 16. This is the ONLY size 16 perle cotton on the market. It tats up exceptionally well and is available in a wide array of beautiful colors. The have a color for whatever project you may be tatting. Perfect Quilter and King Tut threads by Superior are also excellent for tatting and come in a variety of variegated combinations. Tracy just sent me a cone of the "Arabian Nights" color combination in the King Tut line and I must say, it tats beautifully! *Please note that Tracy now has 50 colors in the King Tut line, and she also has the smaller 500 yard spools available.* I will be posting several free patterns next week that were tatted using the King Tut thread.
Pictured below is a pair of dragonfly earrings made with the King Tut thread.

I recently purchased various colors in Caron's Wildflowers line. The thread tats smoothly and has a nice matte finish. This thread is very similar to a Danish flower thread. The variety of variegated color combinations is magnificent!
Of course, DMC perle cottons, Cebelia, and Tradition threads are all excellent and are usually to be found in most tatter's thread boxes. I enjoy using these threads and highly recommend them for beginners.
Oren Bayan and Domino are Turkish brand perle cottons that are gorgeous! I have a hard time finding them and when I do the shipping costs are usually rather high.
Altin Basak is another thread I have enjoyed tatting with. It has a fair color selection and tats well.
